It Is Written.

About this time one year ago, a good friend of mine suggested a book to me called The Alchemist, by Paulo Coehlo.   I didn’t know it then, but that book would forever change the way that I not only viewed my own life, but the way I see the entire universe that surrounds us.

The book’s most significant message is that each of us has a certain mission in life, a reason for being.  Coehlo refers to this mission as one’s “Personal Legend.”   When we discover that mission and actively go out in pursuit of our personal legend, the entire universe conspires to help us achieve our goals.  It was a reminder that everything happens for a reason, whether we like it or not — and that we must always be listening to what the universe is trying to tell us.

This story set me on a path that would forever change the way I not only view my own personal journey, but the entire world around me.   It reminded me of what I seemed to know intuitively as a child.  It’s probably something we all know at some point but either choose to or are forced to forget.

Months later, I read The Power of Myth by Bill Moyers and mythologist Joseph Campbell.  In it, Moyers asks Campbell the age-old question, “what is the meaning of life?”  Campbell goes on to explain that there is no one meaning, but a different one for each of us, but it can be best described as “following your bliss.”

Bliss is derived from the ancient Sanskrit word ‘ananda’.  This word, when translated to English means “supreme happiness,” being in a state of spiritual ecstasy or feeling in harmony and at peace with the entire Universe.

When one is in pursuit of their personal legend they are in fact following their bliss, their reason for being.  What I now believe with all of my heart, is that each of us do have a reason for being here and if we choose to ignore it instead of bring it forth into the world we are sure to destroy ourself.

My personal legend has been, since the time I was a child, to tell stories — to share that which inspires and stirs me with others.  It’s not only the role of an artist, but the responsibility, according to Campbell.  It’s a challenge that I constantly aspire to rise to.

As I continue to fulfill my own personal legend I plan to share details of my journey and the lessons I’ve learned along the way on this forum.  It will be a place for personal reflection, stories of inspiration, and suggestions for personal development and inner-understanding.

In the meantime I challenge you to think about your own personal legend.   Are you pursuing it?  Have you chosen to listen to the universe or ignore it? Each of us has our own pathway to bliss.  It is a difficult road for sure, and to travel it one must go with great conviction.  I’ve always believed that true happiness takes, above all…courage.

The time to write your own destiny is now…seize it.
